Biblically, light has always been a symbol of holiness, wisdom, and God’s promise of revelation. By contrast, darkness has been associated with despair, evil, and sin. God’s promise of light is that he, as a source of light, will bring hope, guidance, and salvation to those who follow him through his Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus tells us in John 8:12 that he is the “light of the world” who dispels darkness and leads people to light and truth. 

God’s Word is a living energy that actively provides a source of insight and direction as we navigate in a dark and sinful world. John 1:5 tells us, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” The light shines in the darkness means Jesus has come into the world, bringing the Good News of God’s salvation to every person. Jesus is the light of God’s truth, the light of God’s Word, and the light of eternal life. This promise gives followers of Christ two guarantees: first, upon repentance of sins and choosing to stay close to the light of the world, they will never walk in darkness; second, the assurance of salvation.

Praise

Give praise for God’s promise of light. John 8:12, “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life’”

He HAS rescued us from darkness!

We have been delivered from the power of darkness and from the bondage of sin. Colossians 1:13-14, “For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in who we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

Because of this…

We may at times stumble into darkness, but we will never “walk” in it. John 12:46, “I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.”

Therefore…

We are to live in obedience to the Lord, illuminating the one true light, Christ Jesus, while walking in love and fleeing from sinful actions. Ephesians 5:8, “For you were one darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of the light.”

Pray

Abba Father,

Because of your grace and mercy, we don’t have to live in the sinful state of darkness. We give praise to you, Father. We ask that you give us a path of light to follow through your Son, Jesus Christ, a path that leads us out of the bondage of sin. Fill us with strength and courage that comes from your promise of light. Grant us the ability to let others see your light shine through us.
