ishing you Happy Grandparenting in 2008

One generation will commend your works to another;
they will tell of your mighty acts.
They will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty,
and I will meditate on your wonderful works.
They will tell the power of your awesome works,
and I will proclaim your great deeds.
They will celebrate your abundant goodness
and joyfully sing of your righteousness.
Psalm 145:4-7

Today there are close to 80 million grandparents in the United States alone, according to Dr. Tim & Darcy Kimmel, in their book Extreme Grandparenting1. That’s a significant amount of grandparents. Imagine the significant difference grandparents could make in the world today by praying regularly and deliberately for our grandchildren, our link into the future.

Once again, it offers us as grandparents an opportunity to touch the lives of another generation, whether we were great parents or not. Most of us have found that beauty is only skin-deep, money does not buy happiness, and power is a two-edged sword. Now we can pass that wisdom on to our grandchildren. The Kimmels say, “As a grandparent who has the benefit of seasoned wisdom, we have the opportunity to come alongside our children and grandchildren with maturity, experience, perspective, assistance, and a love they profoundly need.1. Sharing with them how God has walked with us through the difficulties of life, can give them confidence to allow God to walk with them.

These are just a few thoughts from the book Extreme Grandparenting, a valuable resource for understanding our unique God-given role of passing on a godly legacy to our children and grandchildren. I hope that you will read this highly recommended book for grandparents.

If all 80 million grandparents were praying deliberately and fulfilling our God-given role of leaving a godly legacy we could change the world. The only choice we have is the kind of legacy we are leaving. It’s essential that our legacy points our grandchildren to God and inspires them to walk with Him. Have you thought about what kind of legacy you want to leave? God has promised us in Exodus 20:6 if we love Him and keep His commandments He will show His love to a thousand generations.

What are your plans to have a significant role in the lives of your grandchildren in 2008?

6 Ways to Love a Grandchild In College

It’s the time of year when college-aged grandchildren are shopping for dorm room or apartment supplies as they prepare to begin a new adventure away from the home in which they grew up. No longer “children” but not yet independent adults. Grandparents must adjust their methods of connection with those I lovingly refer to as “chronological adults.”
