Leaving A Legacy Of Honesty

“Honesty guides good people; dishonesty destroys treacherous people.” Proverbs 11:3

Do you remember “Not Me” in the comic strip Family Circus — the ghost-looking character responsible for broken lamps, spilled food, missing cookies and muddy footprints on the kitchen floor? Even now, isn’t it tempting to pin a mistake, an accident or a poor decision on “Not Me”?

Being honest can be hard.  But owning up to our mistakes reflects your character…and your faith…both of which you want your grandchildren to see and mimic.

Since God cannot lie, He sets the example for our behavior. He wants us to do the same with our grandkids, illustrating the behavior we expect from them.

What a disservice we do to our grandchildren if we fail to share about our struggles or are unwilling to tackle uncomfortable topics! We need to create an environment where children are free to express their true emotions so they learn how to deal with them effectively. And, this doesn’t just apply to your grandchildren.

Children in military families who have a deployed parent often are afraid to share their honest emotions—those of fear, abandonment, and anger— because they don’t want to inflict pain on those around them. But suppressing these feelings can turn into illness, acting out or withdrawal.

You have the opportunity to provide these children with a safe environment to deal honestly with the wide range of emotions sparked by having a deployed parent. When you sponsor a military child and one set of their grandparents at Military Kids GrandCamp, you offer an experience and a support network which teaches the value of living a life of integrity.

And when the next person asks those children if they feel all alone, they can honestly answer “Not Me”!
