“Teach me your way, O Lord, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart that I may fear your name.” Psalm 86:11
Oswald Chambers wrote, “The Sermon on the Mount is not an ideal; it is a statement of what will happen in me when Jesus Christ has altered my disposition and put in a disposition like His own.” Perhaps that is what the Psalmist had in mind when he prayed, “give me an undivided heart.”
Accomplished musicians or athletes know about an undivided heart. They understand the importance of a disposition towards a singular cause–being the best in their field. It does not mean they have no other interests, but it does mean that their heart is not divided when it comes to the discipline and energy necessary to excel in that one thing. Everything else is subordinate to that single disposition.
What is the obvious disposition of your heart? If you were to ask you children and grandchildren what it is, what would they say? Would they say your job or career? Perhaps, they would say family. Or might they not be sure? Would any of them see a heart disposed towards walking with and being devoted to God and His purposes?
The Psalmist understood that an undivided heart was a heart wholly disposed towards God and His purposes. Such a heart is filled with an awareness of God’s holiness, power and Sovereign rule. An undivided heart is a heart consumed with God’s truth and compelled to walk in it. Lord, give me an undivided heart and may my children and grandchildren long for such heart because of my heart for You.
