Launch a Grandparent Ministry

Take a moment and consider two questions. First, when was the last time your church addressed grandparenting from the pulpit or in a classroom? Second, what resources do you provide grandparents in your church to help them reach and disciple future generations? If your church is like most, individuals are left to figure out how to grandparent without the support of church leaders. The silence of most churches combined with the powerful messages grandparents hear from culture may have contributed to role confusion and minimized a grandparent’s influence. Imagine the impact if Christian grandparents at your church were given a biblical vision for their place and purpose in the family.

Research reveals grandparents have a large influence on the faith of children, second only to parents. In addition, grandparents have been given a God-ordained role in the Bible. Deuteronomy 4:9 instructs us to teach these things “to your children and your children’s children.” The leaders of the Christian Grandparenting Network have helped hundreds of churches minister to grandparents and we would love to support you! Our message to churches is simple: grandparenting is important and it’s worthy of your time, energy, and resources.

4 Steps to Launch a Grandparenting Ministry

The Christian Grandparenting Network staff have led successful grandparenting ministries at their own churches and recommend the best practices and following steps to start a grandparenting ministry.

  • Step 1: Pray. Spend time in the Lord’s presence and seek His will is an essential step to start any new ministry.

  • Step 2: Learn. Educate yourself about the biblical role of grandparenting. We have a large library of books and resources that help you capture a biblical vision for grandparenting and provide practical ways to disciple your family.

  • Step 3: Share. Arrange a meeting with your pastor or church staff to present your vision for launching a grandparenting ministry. You are seeking your pastors support and blessing.

  • Step 4: Gather. Assemble a core group of grandparents to support you and lend a helping hand in this endeavor. One of the best ways to do this is to begin with a small group study using the book Grandparenting by Dr. Josh Mulvihill and we offer a discount for ten or more copies of books.
