Using the familiar images of salt and light, Jesus paints a challenging picture. He asks us to dig deep within ourselves to connect with the salty presence of the Holy Spirit when almost immediately He tells us to reach high, stretching ourselves to be the beacon of His light to those around us. The ultimate goal is to spend eternity in Heaven with all of our loved ones gathered around us.
God’s Promise of Light
Biblically, light has always been a symbol of holiness, wisdom, and God’s promise of revelation. By contrast, darkness has been associated with despair, evil, and sin. God’s Word is a living energy that actively provides a source of insight and direction as we navigate in a dark and sinful world.
Loving the Unlovely
It is easy to love others when we are loved; this is circumstantial and based on feelings. But what about those who frustrate, anger, criticize, disappoint, hurt, or even just plain annoy us? Can we be genuinely loving to them when they are unlovely? Withholding encouragement, affirmation, and love or withdrawing from difficult people is a form of rejecting not only them but also our Lord Jesus.
