What’s In A Name?

by | Jan 31, 2011 | 0 comments

I grew up in a relatively small city in Wyoming where my father built a very positive reputation and name in that community. Almost anywhere I went as a young boy people knew my father and would say, “Oh, you’re Earl’s son!” Many years later when I needed to see the bank about a business loan, coming in my father’s name opened the door for me to secure the loan.

As a child of God I stand under the authority of the Name that is above every name—Jesus Christ our King. Paul says that all things are placed under His authority and that we have been adopted as sons bearing His Name. As His son and heir I come in the name of our Father, a representative of the King of kings. That means that whatever I do, I must be aware that I am acting as His representative.

That includes being a grandparent. The words I speak, the actions I take, the lifestyle I live, the people I serve are done under the authority and as representatives of Christ, our King. That is why at CGN, we talk of our mission as mobilizing grandparents for Christ who represent Christ intentionally to the next generations. I pray that each of us will, not only desire to represent Christ, but we will do so well with holy and blameless lives. And remember, when you come to Christ’s throne to intercede for your grandchildren, you do so under the authority and as representatives of the King, whose Name is above every other name.

GRANDPAUSE: “A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me? says the Lord Almighty.” Malachi 1:6

The concept of God’s care and compassion is a central theme throughout the Bible. Although the Scriptures – and Jesus as well – refer to God as “Father”, there are numerous examples of God demonstrating nurturing, caring attributes similar to those of a mother.

Bridging the Scriptural Gap for Your Grandchildren

Bridging the scriptural gap does not mean preaching at grandchildren or forcing faith into every conversation. It means standing in the space between biblical truth and everyday life, helping children connect God’s Word to their questions, fears, hopes, and daily experiences.

Helping Grandchildren Discern Truth From Lies

Recently, I programmed my phone’s GPS to guide me to a specific location, and somehow I ended up with two AI women giving me directions at the same time. To make things more confusing, they weren’t giving me the same directions. This experience reminds us that many “voices” compete for our grandchildren’s attention. Some voices impart truth; others don’t.
