TUNING TO CONCERT ‘A’

“My soul finds rest in God alone.” Ps. 62:1

If you’ve ever attended a symphony concert, you know that the musicians all tune to the concertmaster’s concert ‘A’ pitch before the conductor comes out to begin the concert. Imagine attending a symphony concert where the musicians waited till after the concert to tune their instruments rather than before. Apart from being an event you would rather soon forget, the whole point of tuning is missed. Tuning is what makes it possible to enjoy and experience music’s beauty and power. An out of tune orchestra would be a miserable experience for everyone, assuming anyone would stay around.

Imagine what it must be like for the world to live around Christians who are out of tune with what we claim to believe. How often do we go through a day without ever bothering to tune up to God’s concert ‘A’? When our “lifesong” is out of tune, those around us miss the beautiful symphony God has written for us, and we end up driving people away from His beauty and majesty, rather than toward Him.

What is God’s concert ‘A’? It is finding rest for our souls in God alone. The Psalmist knew his soul could only find its perfect rest pitch in God through the daily practice of living in His presence. Business stifles our ability to rest in God’s presence. Prayer, Bible reading, mediation—these are things that tune us up for the concert of life.

An added blessing for tuning up by resting in God alone is the delight of participating in a symphony of ‘lifesongs’ who are in tune with each other in Christ. These are the kind of tuned lives that will draw generation after generation into that symphony as well. Is it time for a tune up?

As grandparents, we need to regularly ask ourselves how well-tuned to God’s concert ‘A’ we are. Do our grandchildren find themselves drawn to Christ or driven from Him because we are out of tune? Leaving a well-tuned legacy requires some rest time. We cannot afford to wait till the damage is done before we work on tuning up.

I’d like to offer a few tips that might help staying in tune:

• Begin each day proclaiming God’s love and surrendering to His rule;

• End each day acknowledging God’s faithfulness and mercy;

• Remember during the day that He is with you, and make it a habit to converse with Him throughout the day seeking His wisdom for decisions to be made;

• Observe a day of rest, and make it holy by responding with wholehearted gratitude and praise for who He is and what He has done.

The Nurturing Qualities of God

The concept of God’s care and compassion is a central theme throughout the Bible. Although the Scriptures – and Jesus as well – refer to God as “Father”, there are numerous examples of God demonstrating nurturing, caring attributes similar to those of a mother.

Bridging the Scriptural Gap for Your Grandchildren

Bridging the scriptural gap does not mean preaching at grandchildren or forcing faith into every conversation. It means standing in the space between biblical truth and everyday life, helping children connect God’s Word to their questions, fears, hopes, and daily experiences.

Helping Grandchildren Discern Truth From Lies

Recently, I programmed my phone’s GPS to guide me to a specific location, and somehow I ended up with two AI women giving me directions at the same time. To make things more confusing, they weren’t giving me the same directions. This experience reminds us that many “voices” compete for our grandchildren’s attention. Some voices impart truth; others don’t.
