NOT ON MY WATCH!

When a grandmother brought her grandson to GrandCamp several summers ago, she was concerned about her grandson’s spiritual welfare and determined to do all she could to give him a chance to know Christ. She was not going to allow her grandson to go through life without knowing how much God loved him and wanted him to know Him…not on her watch.

I’m so glad for grandparents who are committed to doing whatever it takes to make sure their grandchildren, even if they are growing up in a home where Christ is not honored, have a chance to know the truth about God’s grace. Unfortunately, too many grandparents are so focused on their own agenda that this message is not reaching the ears and hearts of their own grandchildren. Such was the case in Judges 2 when a generation after Joshua, Caleb and all those elders who witnessed the Lord’s power grew up not knowing the Lord or the things He had done. How is something so tragic possible?

The only answer I can think of is complacency—failing to take seriously our role as parents and grandparents to tell the next generations. It’s not an easy task, and it is often met with hostility and frequently marked by disappointment. But that does not change our responsibility. Obviously, there is no substitute for being able to carry out that responsibility in partnership with our adult children, and it’s the way it should be. When that is not the case, however, our responsibility as grandparents is not excused.

In either case, we must be diligent, intentional and prayerful. I never want it to be said that the hearts and minds of my grandchildren were stolen away on my watch! May God give us all strength, wisdom and courage to live faithfully with all that has been entrusted to us on our watch.

GRANDPAUSE: He who disregards his calling will never keep the straight path in the duties of his work. (John Calvin)

What we have heard and known, what our father have told us—we will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord… Psalm 78:3-4

Bridging the Scriptural Gap for Your Grandchildren

Bridging the scriptural gap does not mean preaching at grandchildren or forcing faith into every conversation. It means standing in the space between biblical truth and everyday life, helping children connect God’s Word to their questions, fears, hopes, and daily experiences.

Helping Grandchildren Discern Truth From Lies

Recently, I programmed my phone’s GPS to guide me to a specific location, and somehow I ended up with two AI women giving me directions at the same time. To make things more confusing, they weren’t giving me the same directions. This experience reminds us that many “voices” compete for our grandchildren’s attention. Some voices impart truth; others don’t.
