Guard Against Pollution

Last night in our small group Bible study, we were studying James 1:27 where James is telling the Jewish Christians to: “look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” I thought to myself that is something good to pray for my grandchildren and, of course, myself.

James is telling the believers to be generous and help the needy. We can become so busy and self-absorbed that we don’t even notice the needy. When we reach out and help the needy, it is an act of love because the needy cannot repay us.  Let us pray that our grandchildren and we will recognize the needy and help them in their distress.

However, he also tells them to keep themselves from being polluted by the world. In this media-driven culture with the television, Internet, video games, Face book, Twitter, Blogs etc it is hard not to be polluted by the ungodly world. Out media-driven culture is desensitizing our grandchildren, trying to distract and steal them from living for our Lord Jesus Christ.

Pray for your grandchildren to:

  • Recognize the deception and pollution of the godless world.
  • Guard them from the corruption of our godless world.
  • Keep themselves unspotted and uncontained from the world.
  • Refuse to let the world corrupt them and keep them unstained by the world.

Bridging the scriptural gap does not mean preaching at grandchildren or forcing faith into every conversation. It means standing in the space between biblical truth and everyday life, helping children connect God’s Word to their questions, fears, hopes, and daily experiences.

Helping Grandchildren Discern Truth From Lies

Recently, I programmed my phone’s GPS to guide me to a specific location, and somehow I ended up with two AI women giving me directions at the same time. To make things more confusing, they weren’t giving me the same directions. This experience reminds us that many “voices” compete for our grandchildren’s attention. Some voices impart truth; others don’t.

Most of us also remember what it felt like when our own parents interfered in our parenting. We didn’t appreciate it then—and our kids won’t now. So how do we stay involved without overstepping?
