GETTING IT RIGHT

“But seek first His [the Father’s] kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matt. 6:33

Jim Daly, president of Focus On The Family, reported on an interview with Tim Tebow earlier this month by Bill O’Reilly of FoxNews that triggered some interesting responses. Tim Tebow is well known not only for his football skills but for his outspoken faith, and of course, that pro-life SuperBowl ad he and his mom did with Focus On The Family last year.

During the interview Tim made a statement that started folks here in Colorado talking again, at least among Broncos fans. Responding to a question about his attitude towards fame and money, Tim included a comment regarding his priorities last season.

“My No. 1 focus was on my foundation, the Tim Tebow Foundation, to bring faith, hope and love to those needing a brighter day in the darkest hour of need.”

One Denver sports talk show host, missing the point altogether, reacted to Tebow’s comment by asking, “Shouldn’t Tim Tebow’s number one priority be the Denver Broncos?” The calls poured in to the station. Thankfully, most callers took issue with the host and expressed their support for the quarterback. One caller got it right when he said he’d rather have Tim’s “number one priority” be his foundation than the priorities too many other NFL players have—“bling, bars and out-of-wedlock births”. Preach it, brother!

I applaud Tim Tebow who got it right because he was apparently taught right at home. The number one priority of parenting and grandparenting ought to be to teach our children how to get it right when it comes to what is really important in life. That’s Jesus’ point in Matthew 6:33—seek first things first and trust Him for the rest. I wonder—what do our lives say to the next generations about getting it right?

Bridging the Scriptural Gap for Your Grandchildren

Bridging the scriptural gap does not mean preaching at grandchildren or forcing faith into every conversation. It means standing in the space between biblical truth and everyday life, helping children connect God’s Word to their questions, fears, hopes, and daily experiences.

Helping Grandchildren Discern Truth From Lies

Recently, I programmed my phone’s GPS to guide me to a specific location, and somehow I ended up with two AI women giving me directions at the same time. To make things more confusing, they weren’t giving me the same directions. This experience reminds us that many “voices” compete for our grandchildren’s attention. Some voices impart truth; others don’t.

Grandparenting Without Overstepping

Most of us also remember what it felt like when our own parents interfered in our parenting. We didn’t appreciate it then—and our kids won’t now. So how do we stay involved without overstepping?
