Active, Intentional Grandparenting

Grandparents who have a personal relationship with the Creator of the universe have an advantage in their grand parenting. They can call on the Creator to bless their grandchildren and gather wisdom from His Word. Intentional grandparenting does not just happen; we have to make an effort to be actively involved grandparents.

We read in James 1:5, “If you need wisdom—if you want to know what God wants you to do-ask Him, and He will gladly tell you.” There are times I think I should do something with or for my grandchild and I don’t know what that is going to look like so I pray asking God to give me direction and He does give me ideas I wouldn’t have come up with on my own.

 

Grandchildren need intentionally involved grandparents not passive grandparents sitting in the bleachers watching from a distance.  Stephen & Janet Bly give us a description of active grandparents in their excellent book, The Power of a Godly Grandparent.

Active Grandparents

Call their grandkids
Know the grandkids’ sizes
Ask to babysit
Mark grandkids’ special events on calendar
Have the next trip to visit distant grandkids planned
Display the latest school picture in their wallets
Can name their grandchild’s very best friend.  ?

I would like to add a couple more descriptions to their list.

Carry a picture of your grandkids in your cell phone.
Deliberately pray for all your grandkids by name every day.

 

Dear Heavenly Father,
Help me to be an intentional grandparent.
I want to have a growing faith modeling a lifestyle
of relying on God’s guidance for each day.
Show me what you want me to do to encourage
my grandchildren to love you and trust You throughout their lives.
In Jesus Name, Amen
