EXCELLENT GRANDPARENT

“Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live.  Teach them to your children and to their children after them.”
Deut. 4:9

When Buck and Holly planned to have their six oldest grandkids (ages 8-15) from three different states at their house for almost a week for their own special GrandCamp, they prayed that God would truly use this event to show them His grace and truth, prepare them for the challenges ahead, and equip them to live as wholehearted followers of Christ.  Four days filled with morning to evening activity, all purposefully planned and orchestrated to maximize their time together, were thoroughly enjoyed by all the kids, and left a powerful imprints upon their lives.

Why would grandparents go to such lengths to plan such an involved event?  Because Buck and Holly take seriously their Lord’s command to teach their grandchildren about who God is and what He has done, and they have chosen to do it with the utmost intentionality.  They are truly excellent grandparents.

You don’t have to be perfect to be an excellent grandparent.  Doing week long camps like Buck and Holly is not a requirement.  Excellent grandparents are just ordinary people extraordinarily committed to loving their grandchildren with the same excellent love that Christ shows us.

They understand the urgency of this task in the face of an Enemy determined to steal our children’s hearts and minds.  Excellent grandparents are grandparents of action – who like the apostle Paul are committed to finishing well so that their grandchildren might live well.

GRANDPAUSE:
“Our strategic calling as grandparents requires that we stay connected, emotionally engaged, and personally involved in our children’s and grandchildren’s lives.” – Tim & Darcy Kimmell

The concept of God’s care and compassion is a central theme throughout the Bible. Although the Scriptures – and Jesus as well – refer to God as “Father”, there are numerous examples of God demonstrating nurturing, caring attributes similar to those of a mother.

Bridging the Scriptural Gap for Your Grandchildren

Bridging the scriptural gap does not mean preaching at grandchildren or forcing faith into every conversation. It means standing in the space between biblical truth and everyday life, helping children connect God’s Word to their questions, fears, hopes, and daily experiences.

Helping Grandchildren Discern Truth From Lies

Recently, I programmed my phone’s GPS to guide me to a specific location, and somehow I ended up with two AI women giving me directions at the same time. To make things more confusing, they weren’t giving me the same directions. This experience reminds us that many “voices” compete for our grandchildren’s attention. Some voices impart truth; others don’t.
