A High Stakes Response

by | Apr 22, 2012 | 0 comments

“…with God all things are possible.” (Mt. 19:26)

It was December 2011 when security cameras in the bustling town of Wenzou, China recorded the terrifying incident. A small child, resisting her parents, sat down in the middle of the street and stubbornly refused to budge. In frustration her parents started to walk away. Suddenly a car turned the corner and ran over the girl pinning her underneath the vehicle. The security cameras show a several people rushing to the car and lifting up one side so the girl could be freed. It was heartwarming to witness the heroic response of so many people to this high stake event.

There is another ‘high stake’ event requiring a courageous response. The hearts and minds of our children are being run over by the lies and deceptions of Satan and the world. In a world dominated by godlessness, violence, immorality, divorce and greed, our grandchildren are being crushed. We dare not, like the parents of the child in China, turn our backs and walk away from the danger threatening the eternal destiny of the next generations. The danger is real, and the consequences of not taking immediate action could be deadly—in more than one way.

Thankfully, we do not face these challenges alone. God did not send His Son to create a new religion with a bunch of Lone Ranger believers. Through His body He has made us part of His body—a family—whose name is derived from our heavenly Father. We each have a part and we have been given everything we need to carry out that power through His divine power. The task of lifting the weight of Satan’s lies off our children is too great to do by ourselves. But through the power of the Spirit, as each part does its work in concert with the other parts, we can defeat the enemy and rescue the next generations for Christ.

How are you responding to the crisis before us? Do you understand how what’s at stake, or have you been lulled into complacency? The Lord told Moses to instruct the people with these words: “Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely…” so that you can take the appropriate action. Will you be among the heroic responders who come to the rescue? Or will you sit on the sideline and just watch? Consider what’s at stake and remember that with God, all things are possible. It’s time to act!

Bridging the Scriptural Gap for Your Grandchildren

Bridging the scriptural gap does not mean preaching at grandchildren or forcing faith into every conversation. It means standing in the space between biblical truth and everyday life, helping children connect God’s Word to their questions, fears, hopes, and daily experiences.

Helping Grandchildren Discern Truth From Lies

Recently, I programmed my phone’s GPS to guide me to a specific location, and somehow I ended up with two AI women giving me directions at the same time. To make things more confusing, they weren’t giving me the same directions. This experience reminds us that many “voices” compete for our grandchildren’s attention. Some voices impart truth; others don’t.

Grandparenting Without Overstepping

Most of us also remember what it felt like when our own parents interfered in our parenting. We didn’t appreciate it then—and our kids won’t now. So how do we stay involved without overstepping?
