Discovering Jesus – The Lamb of God

During biblical times in the Jewish religious life and sacrificial system, lambs played a very important role. At the temple in Jerusalem lambs were sacrificed daily to atone for the sins of the people (Exodus 29:38-42). The lambs used in these sacrifices had to be spotless, without blemish or defects as they symbolized perfect, blameless purity. They represented the innocent life offered as a substitute to save the Israelites from divine judgment. These sacrificial lambs foreshadowed what the prophet Isaiah told of the coming of the One who would be brought “like a lamb to the slaughter” (Isaiah 53:7). This biblical prophecy speaks of Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.

The Wages of Sin

The idea of a sacrificial system is strange to us today, but the concept of payment or restitution is one we understand. Romans 6:23 tells us “the wages of sin is death” and that our sin separates us from God. The only way we can be reconciled to God was for him to provide a way for atonement. In John 1:29, John the Baptist shouted, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”. John the Baptist had been prepared by God to identify the Messiah, and his statement fulfills the Old Testament prophecy of the ultimate, sinless sacrifice for mankind. Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross made him the perfect, final atonement for sin, unlike the lambs that were temporary sacrifices that preceded him.

The Lamb of God

Jesus, as the Lamb of God, being spotless and blameless, is the pure, innocent, and final sacrifice for humanity’s sins. His sacrifice provides the reconciliation between God and man. His death and resurrection were a complete and final payment for sin, providing a way to break the bonds of sin and provide eternal life.

Pray

Lord God Almighty,

I praise the name of the Lamb of God, Christ Jesus, who has given me eternal life by his sacrifice on the cross. His divine power to conquer death and redeem the world gives me the hope in the promise of eternal life. As reigning King of the universe, he is worthy of worship and praise. I give thanks for the Lamb who is victorious in making a dark world shine and providing a way of reconciliation with you, O Lord. May your mercy and grace be a blessing on your grateful servant for all the days of my life.

In the name of Jesus,

Amen.

Bread baking is one of my favorite pastimes. It began when my mother first introduced me to the art of yeasted breadmaking. Back then, I had to climb up onto a chair to reach the counter. I loved standing there with my mother’s arms wrapped around me while she pressed...

God instructs grandparents to teach grandchildren the truths of Scripture. Deuteronomy 4:9 states, “Teach these things to your children and children’s children.” In Psalm 78:5 God commands grandparents to teach multiple generations to obey God’s commands. Throughout church history the primary method to teach and disciple young people has been called family worship.
