An advocate is someone who comes to our aid or pleads our case to a judge. Advocates offer support and intercede for us when necessary. An earthly advocate can only plead our case from external evidence or witness testimony. Christ, our heavenly advocate, knows our hearts and pleads our case to the Father. Scripture tells us in 1 John 2:1 that “…we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” This clearly tells us that Jesus is still very active on our behalf in heaven.

Jesus Sitting at the Right Hand of God

After Jesus’ death, God raised him from the dead, and Jesus ascended into heaven where he now sits at the right hand of God the Father (Hebrews 12:2). Sitting at the right hand of God not only signifies Jesus’ authority, but as a living, exalted, and triumphant Redeemer, he intercedes on our behalf before the throne (Romans 8:34).

Jesus Standing at the Right Hand of God

In Acts 7, Stephen, a deacon in the early church, is stoned to death after speaking as a witness for Christ. In Acts 7:55-56, filled with the Holy Spirit, the martyr Stephen looks up to heaven and sees the glory of God, with Jesus standing at the right hand of God. Jesus, acting as an advocate, was present and actively acknowledging Stephen’s faithfulness and impending reward. While often seated at the right hand of God, Jesus standing to meet Stephen signifies welcoming him into heaven.

Will Jesus Stand to Welcome Us into Heaven?

Yes, Scripture states that Jesus stands ready to welcome believers into his kingdom. In John 14:3, Jesus promises, “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” Jesus remains our advocate forever and will personally welcome believers into their eternal home.

Lord Jesus,

I rest in your faithful grace over my life. Thank You for being my advocate and interceding for me before the Father. You justify me when I stumble. Your strength defends me when I am weak. You stand for me when I cannot defend myself. You guard me with your presence. For all of this I am grateful. My vision is that of Stephen’s and my heart is full of peace knowing you will someday stand to welcome me for eternity into your kingdom.
