A Graduation Gift That Keeps On Giving

Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding. Prov. 3:13

Some of you grandparents have grandchildren who are about to graduate from high school and head off to college, the military or another career path as young adults. Would you like to give a graduation gift that keeps on giving-that could possibly impact their lives for the rest of the lives? If that sounds intriguing to you, then I have a suggestion you will want to hear about.

I had the privilege of sitting down recently with Jeff Myers, President of Summit Ministries. Jeff told me the story of one grandmother who decided to give a special graduation gift to her grandson. She called her grandson and asked him to drop by the house so she could give him her gift. He, of course, was excited with anticipation of the gift he would be getting. He knew his grandmother was gracious and generous. He could hardly contain himself thinking about the possibilities for his graduation gift.

When he arrived at the house, she smiled and gave him an envelope. What could it be—a gift certificate for a computer, money, a title to a car? He could hardly contain himself as he tore open the envelope. Inside was a card with a note that explaining he had been given a two-week Summit Ministries Student Conference in Colorado, all expenses paid. He thanked his grandmother, but the disappointment on his face was obvious.

Ironically, this young man attended the conference because it had been paid for, and called his grandmother from the conference to thank her. He shared how this had turned out to be one of the most significant events in his life. God had changed him and he now had a new view of God’s purpose for his life.

Grandparents, what if you could give a graduation gift that truly mattered to your grandson or granddaughter when they graduated from high school? You can! I urge you to visit the Summit Ministries website and consider doing what this grandmother did for her grandson—give them a gift to attend a Student Summit Conference during the summer.

Our desire as Christian grandparents is to see our grandchildren walking in the truth. Summit Ministries can be a transformational instrument for that to become a reality. Our grandkids don’t need more ‘stuff’, but they do need the truth and the tools to navigate this turbulent, and sometimes hostile, world we helped make. So, make an investment that will keep on giving. If you do, you will be building a legacy that will outlive you through all eternity.

For more information about Summit Ministries programs, visit their website at www.summit.org. (By the way—grandparents, there is an adult conference you might want to consider attending as well if you want to better understand the world we live in and gain some tools to deal with it.)

6 Ways to Love a Grandchild In College

It’s the time of year when college-aged grandchildren are shopping for dorm room or apartment supplies as they prepare to begin a new adventure away from the home in which they grew up. No longer “children” but not yet independent adults. Grandparents must adjust their methods of connection with those I lovingly refer to as “chronological adults.”
