Kindness is the fifth characteristic of the fruit of Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) which results when we allow the Holy Spirit to develop spiritual maturity in us. While kindness is a quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate with good deeds, it is more than a moral principle. It is a spiritual fruit that transforms our lives and the world around us. The Greek definition of kindness is “benignity, tender concern, uprightness” and is the result of kindness of heart and kindness of action.
Maintaining an attitude and expressing tenderness to others is often hard and we cannot accomplish Christ-like kindness on our own power. It requires God’s Spirit working in us. The Apostle Paul states in Philippians 2:13 (ESV), “for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” When God’s spirit works in us it will bears his fruit.
Praise
Praise God that he gives us an opportunity to show kindness. “So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone…” (Galatians 6:10, ESV)
Examine the Scriptures
Why does God want us to demonstrate kindness?
As followers of Christ, God want us to become like him. “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32, ESV)
Should we be kind to those we consider unworthy?
When we follow Christ’s command to be kind to others, it’s not because they are “worthy” or “deserve” it, but because he requires it of us. “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.” (Colossians 3:12, ESV)
How does my kindness affect others?
When we are kind to others in looks, words, and actions we are fulfilling God’s desire for his church. “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.” (Matthew 25:35-36, ESV)
Pray
Holy Father,
Lead and guide me today to show kindness to others as Christ has shown me kindness. May my eyes and arms be open to those in need of Christ’s kindness as it is demonstrated through me, your servant. May my hand be extended so those may see you in my kind words and actions. I pray for the strength to show kindness in all that I do.
In Jesus’ name
Amen.
